Understanding iOS Payments and Creator Earnings

Understanding Payments in the iOS App From the Perspective of a Creator

Updated this week

When a subscriber pays through the iOS app, Apple requires us to use their In-App Purchase system. This ensures compliance with App Store rules, but it also means that all payments made through the iOS app are subject to Apple’s App Store fee and VAT.

Because of this, subscription prices in the iOS app are always higher than on the web or Android. The difference, however, affects only subscribers. Creators always receive the same payout regardless of where the subscription was purchased.

What This Means for You as a Creator

You earn the same amount for every subscription — whether it’s purchased on the web, Android, or iOS. The additional Apple fee is reflected only in the price paid by the subscriber, not in your payout.

Why the iOS Price Is Higher

Apple charges a commission for processing payments made through its App Store, along with VAT and licensing costs. Herohero includes these costs in the iOS subscription price so that creators continue to earn the same amount as they do from web or Android subscriptions.

Payments and Currencies

Apple always processes payments in the local currency 🌍. If your subscription is set at €10, subscribers on the web will always pay exactly €10. In the iOS app, however, Apple converts that amount into local currency — for example, Czech crowns (CZK) for users in the Czech Republic. Subscribers from Slovakia continue to pay in euros (EUR). Subscriptions in USD are handled via regular card payments and are not affected by iOS payments.

VAT and Apple’s Role

When a subscription is sold through Apple, the process works a bit differently than a regular Herohero subscription. In this case, the customer is buying directly from Apple, not from Herohero or the creator.

Herohero’s role is simply to ensure that the creator’s content is available on the App Store and that their share of the revenue is correctly forwarded after deducting Apple’s and Herohero’s fees. This is not a typical purchase or sale between Herohero and the creator – it’s a technical transaction within the distribution model, where Herohero only distributes the income to your Stripe account.

Therefore, the usual VAT rules between Herohero and the creator do not apply here. VAT from the sale is handled by Apple, as they are the entity actually selling to the end customer.

TL;DR

Will my payout change because of Apple’s fees?

🙅 No. Your payout remains the same as for web subscriptions. The higher iOS price only affects the subscriber.

Who issues the invoice to the subscriber?

Apple does 🍎. Since Apple is the seller in this transaction, they handle all VAT and invoicing for the end customer.

Do I need to adjust my pricing for iOS?

🙅 No. Herohero automatically adjusts the iOS subscription price so that your earnings stay the same.
